What's written on the back of your WiFi card

Somewhere around the third hour, it happens.

The coffee has gone cold. The chapter you've rewritten twice still won't sit right. Your review notes have started to blur into each other, and the exam is not getting any further away.

This is usually when people turn the card over.

Every guest at Kataid gets a small paper card at the counter. One side has the WiFi login. The other side has a single line, written by us, for exactly this moment.

"This hour could be the one that shifts things."

"Keep going, the rest will follow."

"You did that, and it counts."

You get whichever card is next in the stack. It might be one of these, or one you haven't seen yet.

Why a WiFi card

Kataid is a Bikol word. It means beside you: the presence of someone working alongside you.

We took that name seriously. We also knew we couldn't pull up a chair next to everyone who walks in and tell them they're doing fine. Most people wouldn't want us to.

So we looked for the one thing every guest touches on every visit. It turned out to be the WiFi card. It sits on your desk for hours, it asks nothing of you, and it's there when you look up.

A slip of paper can't do the work for you. It can keep you company while you do it.

The kind of work we had in mind

Most people who come here are in the middle of something long. A thesis that needs one more revision. A board exam review that runs for months. A freelance project with a deadline that keeps moving.

Very little of that work is dramatic. It's the same desk, the same notes, the same hour, done again tomorrow. Nobody applauds it. It rarely makes it onto anyone's feed.

We think it deserves to be noticed anyway. That's what our tagline means: Quiet effort. Steady progress. The lines on our cards come from the same place. None of them promise that today will be easy. They only remind you that the hour you're putting in is real, and that it adds up.

Then someone turned hers over

We hoped someone would read the backs of the cards. We didn't expect to hear about it.

Then a review came in from Jade. Her card said "You did that, and it counts." She took a photo of it and posted it with her review. She wrote about the staff, the meeting room, and an interior that helped her get things done. Then she wrote this:

"Overall, I could say that Kataid really embodies their name."

She added that we're beside you as you pursue things in life. That's the sentence we had been trying to say with every card, and a guest said it for us.

She ended with four words: "Definitely, I'll go back."
